The Coelia bella is an unusual orchid that has been in our collection for 40+ years! ⁠

Its claim to fame is its flowering time, as it is guaranteed to be in flower on Christmas day, and interestingly it has a strong scent of marzipan – great for those who enjoy Christmas cake 🎂⁠

Given its distinctive aroma, its easy to locate in the Display House and the large specimen plants we have, carry hundreds of flowers all at the same time. ⁠
⁠
Sometimes the scent can be almost overwhelming. ⁠
⁠
However, the beautiful flowers are secreted at the base of the plant, hidden beneath its long leaves and are best viewed from underneath.⁠

This stunning, vibrantly coloured and very florife

This stunning, vibrantly coloured and very floriferous orchid, Cattlianthe Porcia, is a hybrid between Cattleya Armstrongiae (1907) and the species Guarianthe bowringiana.

It has a prestigious history and was created by the famous hybridiser and grower H.G. Alexander around the end of WWI. It first flowered in for him in 1927.

At the Foundation we have several large, established plants growing in the Display House and additionally in the growing houses. Together, they make an impressive wall of colour and can brighten the darkest of winter days.
